A RETREAT WITHIN YOUR RETREAT

Custom pool grottos.
A place to escape.

Create a sheltered poolside space behind moving water, framed by hand-sculpted rock. Your grotto begins with the way you want to experience it.

More than a waterfall

A grotto introduces a space within the feature: an opening beneath or behind the rockwork, often with a waterfall across the front. It can become a quiet retreat or the centrepiece of a larger poolscape. Its scale should feel intentional from both the water and the surrounding patio.

We shape the rock texture and silhouette by hand. Openings, water paths and any seating are considered together, so the finished feature reads as one composition.

Designing the space inside

We begin with the pool dimensions, water level and the area available for the feature. The depth of the opening, visibility, access and interior clearances all influence what is practical. A small waterfall-covered recess has different requirements from a larger grotto intended to accommodate seating.

Integrated lighting can reveal the texture inside the opening and make the waterfall a focal point after dark. A slide may be incorporated where the site allows, but it needs its own access and water-entry assessment.

Planning the structure before the finish

A grotto includes overhead construction, making structural support and foundation planning essential. We review site conditions and establish the engineering and permit requirements for the proposed scope before construction. Pool equipment and any electrical work also need to be coordinated.

On an existing pool, the deck, coping and pool shell affect the available layout. A grotto may be feasible, but it should never be assumed that the existing deck can support the proposed feature.

An individual design and quote

Grotto pricing is influenced by the size and span of the opening, foundation and structural requirements, access, sculpted finish, water delivery and lighting. Adding a slide or changing surrounding hardscape broadens the work.

Start with photos or pool plans and describe how you want to use the space. We can explore a suitable direction, identify the information needed from your site and work toward a defined scope.

PLAN WITH CONFIDENCE

Pool grottos: your questions

Can a grotto be added after the pool is built?

It may be possible if the pool layout, available space, structure and construction access allow it. A site review is needed before confirming feasibility or a design.

Does every grotto have a waterfall?

A waterfall curtain is a popular part of the design, but the amount and placement of water can vary. We can discuss a full curtain, smaller cascades or a more open rock retreat.

Will a grotto fit in a smaller backyard?

Some sites suit a compact opening or waterfall recess. The right answer depends on more than the yard size: pool geometry, required clearances, supporting structure and access all matter. A standalone waterfall may be a better fit where space is tight.

How do I maintain the space behind the waterfall?

The design needs to allow access for cleaning and inspection. Pool water balance, debris removal and care of the rock finish remain important, along with maintenance and winterization of the water and lighting systems.
